The Brooklyn Half—Marathon bib pick up is now open at E. 89th St. Come early and avoid the long lines. Details here.
On a blustery day in Brooklyn, thousands of runners came out to honor the legacy of Al Gordon, a lifelong fitness fanatic who ran his first marathon at age 80—and lived to 107. So it was only fitting that Gordon's grandson, John Roberts, broke the tape with a time of 21:02. The former Harvard standout and current Central Park Track Club New Balance runner finally got the win he'd been chasing for years. Intent on keeping his family's fitness tradition alive, 32-year-old Roberts is clearly poised to fill his granddad's big sneakers.
Many of the nearly 4,500 participants in the Al Gordon Classic 4-Mile race were happy to exchange their customary Central Park loop for the smaller—but just as challenging—Prospect Park loop. Home-course advantage clearly went to Prospect Park's own PPTC; team members thoroughly enjoyed testing their racing limits on their familiar practice course. “It’s really great to be able to get a chance to race where I train,” noted PPTC runner Kristen Ulrich. She hastened to add, “And I got my best time today!”
