Over 15,000 runners came out to Run the City today. An exciting new course, almost perfect running conditions, and fantastic post race entertainment were highlights of the day. NYRR is pleased to bring you our expanded race coverage.
A look at the numbers recorded at the NYC Half 2012 shows that the event exceeded expectations in many ways:
26,797 applicants
19,071 registrants, a record number
15,398 starters
15,336 finishers (7,456 men, 7,880 women; a huge record—previous record finisher total: 11,604 in 2010)
13,698 finishers from the U.S.
11,332 finishers from the tristate area
1,638 international finishers
21,400 attendees at the NYC Half Expo Presented by Poland Spring (a record number)
10 event partners, the most ever
Why do people decide to run the NYC Half for charity? The reasons are as varied as charities themselves—the race has 75 official charity partners, and additional charities that runners contribute to through the fundraising platform Crowdrise.
Because of the NYC Half’s new finish line this year—right next to the South Street Seaport—race participants and fans could do a lot more than just catch a train home. The Post-Race Festival Presented by Poland Spring offered many pleasant alternatives: Greeting finishers at the entrance to the waterfront festival area were the very visible members of the Shinbone Alley Stilt Band, who played sprightly brass-and-drums numbers at an altitude of about four feet above wharf level.
You could hear them cheering from Harlem to the Seaport, in the park, and all over Times Square. They weren't there to compete or to get a medal, but they were just as integral to the NYC Half 2012 as the 15,000 participants--and there were lots of them! Spectators lined the course in the early morning hours and they moved from place to place to catch their runners once, twice, maybe even three times over the course of 13.1 miles.
Deriba Merga took it out from the gun in today’s seventh-annual NYC Half. So did Kim Smith. From Central Park, down Seventh Avenue, through Times Square, and along the West Side Highway they set a pace both fast and relentless, fighting the hills and the wind, the course records in their sights.
The largest field in race history – 15,330 starters – trailed them. But it was only the lone man and lone woman right behind them who really mattered.
